I think the atomic bomb is the greatest invention ever. Humans have been fighting wars to the death since the beginning. Battles with swords, spears, knives, axes, clubs, and arrows have killed at least 25,000 people in ONE day several times in history.
World War One killed 20 million people. World War 2 killed 50 million people, some say 80 million. Without the atomic bombs dropped on Japan, another 10 million would have died: most Japanese would rather die than surrender! World War 2 was two small countries against the rest of the world.
A conventional World War 3 between the two giant Superpowers would have killed billions of people, perhaps 50% of everyone! There is no doubt in my mind that WW3 would have happened without the Atomic Bomb, no doubt whatsoever!
I, and perhaps 50% of all humans alive today, owe their lives to the deterrence of the Atomic Bomb!
Dropping the bombs on Japan showed Michi Hirohito, Japanese emperor, and even more importantly Joseph Stalin, ruthless dictator of the massive Soviet Union, that we had devastating destructive power and would not hesitate to use it to destroy our enemies.
Lastly, I would rather die instantly and unaware in a nuclear fireball than die in hours of agony with a bayonet through a kidney!
PS: Beware if leaders of a nuclear power go south of the Equator! If a nuclear war between the USA and the USSR took place, the whole world wouldn’t be destroyed. Only the Northern Hemisphere would be radioactive and kill most living things. The Southern Hemisphere would be clean because the air in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres does not mix. At the Equator, air rises and returns to its own Hemisphere!
